Seven Verses Every Christian Should Know

The Bible is a big book and can be a daunting read. Most Christians go their whole lives without truly understanding all of it. Many Christians go their whole lives without reading all of it. That is unfortunate, but also somewhat understandable. Not everyone is meant to be a Bible scholar. Still, we’re all charged with sharing the Gospel. You can’t do that without knowing the Bible to some extent. You have to know enough of the Bible to be able to explain what the Gospel actually is. Additionally, as you share the Gospel, you will likely encounter common questions from unbelievers. Knowledge of God’s Word is what will empower you to answer many of those questions.

No one learned the Bible overnight. Everyone has to start somewhere. This entry can serve as a good starting point. Below you’ll find seven Bible verses that every Christian should know. If you want to start your journey towards becoming more Biblically proficient you can learn these verses. Perhaps at first, it may be easiest to learn the book, chapter, and verse for quick reference. Then you can learn the verses themselves. Then from there you can go on to find additional verses that impact you through your own reading and learn them. The task of absorbing God’s Word is a lifelong journey. Here’s your first step.
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness - 2 Timothy 3:16
We’ll start with this verse. It clarifies why God’s Word is so important in the first place. This is why we live by it, and it also serves as the reason we’d want to learn these verses.
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. - John 3:16
This verse from the book of John is probably the most important verse in the Bible. The verse reference is so well known it has become a meme. There’s good reason for that. It summarizes the Gospel into a single sentence. If people want to know what Christianity is truly about, they should know this verse.
I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. - Galatians 2:20
This is a good follow-on verse to the John verse. Whereas the John verse explains what God and His Son did. This verse takes the next step of explaining what it means for believers. Now we know what Jesus did for us and what we should do in response.
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile. - Romans 1:16
Now that you know what the Gospel is, you need to know what it can do. This verse from Romans tells us two things: first, we should be bold in our acceptance and profession of the Gospel and second, we should understand that it is the Gospel that opens the door for everyone’s salvation.
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God - Romans 3:23
Another verse from Romans, this one explains why the Gospel is so vital. Sin separated us from God. We needed Jesus’ sacrifice to restore that bond.
I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. - Psalms 119:11
This verse is another one that performs double duty. It gives us the key for how we can learn to avoid the sin mentioned in the previous verse and it also justifies the need for diving into and learning God’s Word.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. - Proverbs 3:5-6
Finally, this verse explains how we should operate once we accept the Gospel. Whether it's avoiding sin or understanding God’s Word, we cannot accomplish any of it without His help and guidance.
